Message from the Director

Dear students, welcome to the Department of Social Work of National Taipei University and become part of our growing family. Our Department grew out of the Department of Social Administration of the former Junior College of Administration which was established more than 60 years ago. Our dedication to cultivating talents specializing in social work and social policy bring us our innumerable outstanding alumni who have all worked diligently in different fields in Taiwan. We hope that everyone at school may not only acquire various core competencies but develop their capabilities in independent learning and speculation, and by expanding their understanding of and concern for social issues, they can live up to their ideals and finally thrive and shine in each field.

Our Department has the faculty of high quality with many adjunct and full-time professors. The courses are carried out step by step in combination with rigorous internship planning so that students will gradually be acquainted with the content and characteristics of the profession of social work and may be equipped with relevant knowledge and skills. At the same time, according to social trends and our Department’s advantages, we have developed three learning groups, i.e. “Health and Care”, “Children, Adolescents and Family Social Work”, and “Policy and Management”, which all together offer a wide variety of professional courses in response to students’ diverse interests. Furthermore, interdisciplinary cooperation has been promoted by jointly organizing the “Family Act and Bachelor Program in Social Work” with the Department of Law. It is also suggested that students can take courses at other departments and schools, along with some activities, such as lectures, seminars and workshops held by our Department for enhancing their professionalism and competitiveness.

Social work attaches great importance to practical training and experience, and thus our professional teachers are here to offer supervision and consultation by walking students through the internship program. The whole process includes the introduction to social welfare organizations, the preparation of application materials, the description of work ethics and working in organizations. In addition, we encourage students to leave their comfort zone, meet new challenges and broaden vision with international point of view by applying for overseas internship and exchange programs. There are also a wide range of opportunities of service, learning, and club activities at our Department and school, the “One-Day Experience in the Workplace” arranged by our enthusiastic alumni, in conjunction with scholarships and resources, all of which support students in deepening their civic literacy, heightening their concern for the local community, getting closer to the social and industrial context, as well as exploring their interests for establishing the direction of their future career. We believe that students in this environment which is full of passion and love will be able to have a fulfilling and wonderful time in their college days and to get ready for working towards their goals in life.
