Cultural intermediaries and subcultural practitioners in East Asia: A Bourdieusian approach to Three Kingdoms BL doujinshi in China, Japan and Taiwan

Bourdieu’s notion of cultural intermediaries describes those who provide symbolic

goods and services in-between the moments of cultural production and consumption.

Related literature largely focuses on commercial and professional occupations, and

few have attempted to apply the conceptual tool to the subcultural practices of

amateur or grassroots intermediaries who work beyond the established spheres of

cultural production and consumption. This paper builds on Bourdieu’s ideas to

examine a niche group of subcultural practitioners who are notable for their interest in

the Chinese Three Kingdoms legend and for their involvement in the East Asian boys

love (BL) doujinshi market. As cultural qualifiers and tastemakers within their area of

interest, these participants challenge the notions of creative work and cultural

hierarchies.
